Mycotoxins in Feed and Their Impact on Animal Health
Mycotoxins are natural contaminants of cereal grains, legumes, sunflower seeds, as well as vegetables and fruit. They contaminate feed crops during growth and harvesting, and raw materials during storage.
Adverse environmental factors affect the quality of silage and haylage: rain and increased moisture content in harvested green mass can trigger active growth of mold fungi (mycotoxins). In general, mycotoxins are toxic byproducts of fungal metabolism.

Mycotoxins enter the intestine of poultry through feed, triggering an inflammatory process that leads to immune system suppression and energy loss.
The intestinal wall is the primary barrier that pathogens must overcome to infect the bird. However, when mycotoxins are present, this barrier is compromised, allowing pathogen colonization.
Subsequently, mycotoxins weaken the immune system, cause excessive inflammation, and the body loses its ability to resist the process.
Let us consider the impact of mycotoxins on young stock and cattle.
In cows, the primary sign of an emerging infectious disease is a decline in milk production, and the secondary sign is digestive disorders (undigested feed particles in manure).
Young cattle, due to their underdeveloped rumen microflora, suffer from mycotoxins to a greater extent than adult stock.

What happens when various types of mycotoxins affect the calf organism:
- reduced feed intake, and sometimes complete feed refusal;
- reduced live weight gain;
- GI tract disorders.
